Short/high level overview of OERA (Open Edge Reference Architecture)

The OpenEdge platform provides the tools and technologies for developing best-of-breed competitive applications able to meet business, user and technology demands. In order to best use these capabilities, it is important that applications be designed and developed to meet business and technical challenges. The OpenEdge Reference Architecture serves as a set of guidelines and best practices for designing and developing applications that meet today's requirements. In this session, you'll learn what the OpenEdge Reference Architecture is, what it consists of and how it can benefit you in the design and development of modern competitive business applications. OERA Implementation Introduction

The OpenEdge Reference Implementation (OERI)

It is one thing to provide an architecture within which to design the elements of an application. Understanding how best to implement that architecture using OpenEdge 10 is quite another. There is no single correct way to represent any of the application layers in the Progress 4GL, but it is the goal of this session to provide an overview and some examples of “best practices” in implementing the OERA. That is what is called the OpenEdge Reference Implementation (OERI). It is a Reference Implementation because the intention is that you will refer to and study the materials and learn from them, getting a better understanding of how to think about the problems the architecture is intended to help you solve, and how best to adapt the material to your own specific requirements. It is not intended to serve as a framework to base your application on without any change.

Current and future tools/frameworks/initiatives

What are the tools/whitepapers etc. to come (OpenEdge 10.1, other sources) to support building applications that are based on the OERA. An example of this is the new Progress IDE (using the Eclipse framework).

Legacy Application to OERA based Application transformation using the Progress Application Transformation approach..

To ensure our partners and customers build the most modern, competitive applications, Progress has created the OpenEdge Reference Architecture and the Application Transformation Approach - blueprints designed to successfully guide our partners and customers through the application transformation process. This method combines the principles from industry standards as well as Progress expertise, to ensure a "best practices" approach to application transformation. This session will present the Application Transformation Approach (methodology) together with an application transformation demonstration using UML and Progress 4GL.
